22.6 Things To Do - #18. Brave New World

"O brave new world that has such people in it."

Continuing with the whole book thing, I read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. This has to be the worst novel about a dystopia I've ever read only because Huxley's nightmare vision of futuristic London is my vision of heaven on earth. Imagine a world where you get to sleep with anyone you want, and where there's even government sponsored orgies. Imagine a world where there is no anger, sadness, or hatred because you're always high off government sponsored antidepressants. So let's recap. You're always having sex. You're always in a positive mood. If that's not a utopia I don't know what is.

Huxley's futuristic London reminds me of the Masterdome, circa 1999. Anyone fortunate enough to hang out at this former San Bernadino hot spot might know what I'm talking about.

In some recent news about this book, Ridley Scott (director of modern classics such as Blade Runner, Gladiator, and Black Hawk Down) is set to helm the movie version of the novel with Leonard Dicaprio rumored to star. I'm pretty excited about that pairing. For those interested in seeing a really good movie about a similar utopia/dystopia, I'd recommend watching Gattaca, staring Ethan Hawk, Uma Thurman, and Jude Law in his breakout role.

So there you have it. 7.4 things done, 22.6 things to go. Until next time...
