18.5 Things To Do - #14 Eat Out By Myself

#14 on my list was to eat at a nice restaurant by myself. I stole this one from another friend’s “30 before 30” list. I’ve never actually eaten at any sit-down restaurant on my own so I thought this would be an interesting experience. Here's what happened when I called one of the best steakhouse in town on a Saturday afternoon to make a reservation for Saturday night:

I’d like to make a reservation for tonight. Do you have tables available?

I’m sorry; we are completely booked tonight. There’s a convention going on this week and its prom night throughout the city.

Aw, really? Are you sure there’s nothing you can do?

Let me do my best. How many are in your party?

Just me.

Just one? Really? Oh! Of course we have a table for you.

You do?

We certainly do. Just tell me what time is best for you and we’ll fit you right in. We could never say no to somebody eating alone.

Riiight.

Lesson #1 – I could eat anywhere, at anytime, provided that I'm by myself.

The actual experience of eating by myself was pretty uneventful. While I was there I only saw three other people eating alone. All three were old, bald, Caucasian males. All three read the newspaper to keep them company. I read the news on my phone to keep myself busy. I was on my phone a lot that night.

Lesson #2 – When I’m bored or lonely I’ll turn to my phone

I went into this dinner hoping I’d discover something new about myself. One of the reasons for making this list is to figure out who Phimmy really is. Unfortunately this experience only reaffirmed what I already knew.

Lesson #3 –

To the person that I stole this from: You know who you are. Thank you very much for the idea.

So there you have it. 11.5 things done, 18.5 things to go. Until next time…
